Hard freeze warning remains through Wednesday morning
Most, if not all the frozen precipitation associated with the arctic front, has ended throughout the area, but roads can remain slick, cautioned the Austin/San Antonio National Weather Service forecast office in its afternoon briefing today, Monday, Jan. 15.
“The very cold temperatures that we’re seeing will stay in place through Wednesday morning, and the NWS has issued a hard freeze warning through 10 a.m. that day,” said Kerr County Emergency Management Coordinator William B. “Dub” Thomas. “Some areas may not jump above freezing until Wednesday, and the long periods of below freezing temperatures puts pipes at particular risk for bursting,” he added.
In addition, the NWS also issued a wind chill advisory/warning, effective through Tuesday morning.
Everyone is encouraged to avoid prolonged time outdoors and, if they have to go outside for any reason, they should dress appropriately. “Wind chills this low are not common here,” Thomas said. The NWS predicted wind chills of -10 degrees to 0 degrees tonight and Tuesday morning.
The low temperatures Tuesday are expected to be around 13 degrees, according to the NWS forecasters.
Monday was an observed holiday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the city, county and school district levels, so much traffic was avoidable and unnecessary Monday morning.
As far as Tuesday, however, the decision remains up in the air.
Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly said Monday evening that county offices located in the Kerr County Courthouse, 700 Main Street in Kerrville, and the West Kerr County Courthouse Annex, 510 College Street in Ingram, will follow the Kerrville Independent School District’s decision for inclement weather protocol as far as the work day tomorrow. If the schools have a delayed start, so, too, will the county offices.
KISD posts its decision by 6 a.m. on the day in question on the school district’s website, as well as its Facebook page.
If no notice is posted, then the assumption is that the schools are open on a normal schedule.
This is the final update for this particular weather event.
