Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event Postponed

The annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Event, co-hosted by Kerr County, Texas, and the City of Kerrville, has been postponed until late summer or early fall.

Originally slated for April 22, the event had to be postponed due to a delay in approval from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), according to David Barrera, assistant director of public works for the city.

The city and county have jointly held the event in previous years in order to offer residents a safe alternative for the disposal of everything from tires and batteries to electronics and more.

The two local governing entities encourage citizens to follow best practices when it comes to household hazardous materials throughout the year in order to protect and preserve our environment.

Here are a few tips to follow:

• Household paint may be dried in the can, sealed, then disposed of along with household trash. If the paint can is fairly full, add a scoop of kitty litter and shake for faster drying. Other local stores may carry other materials specifically for unused paint. Securing the lid with duct tape will help keep the lid in place.

• To discard of household batteries, wrap batteries with duct tape so that the positive and negative posts are covered. The batteries may then be included with household trash.

• Household cleaners and pesticide containers may be secured in individual plastic bags and discarded with household trash.

Autozone, O’Reilly’s and Walmart all accept used motor oil, and Walmart also accepts used oil filters. It is suggested to call the business before dropping off material to determine if this practice has changed.

Kerr County, Texas, will post the new date of the 2023 Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event once it has been rescheduled. Watch here and online, as well as local news agencies for notification of the new date.
