Kerr County Clerk resigns; May 4 City of Kerrville election to continue unchanged
Kerr County Clerk Ian Collum resigned on Wednesday, May 1, but the City of Kerrville election tomorrow, May 4, will be unaffected, county leaders said.
Kerr County officials confirmed yesterday that a representative from the Secretary of State’s office will be sent to provide oversight at the polls this Saturday, May 4, during the City of Kerrville election, as is common protocol for any election.
Collum’s resignation letter cited ongoing health issues as the reason he decided to step down. By law, he continues to be the county clerk until the Kerr County Commissioners’ Court formally accepts his resignation.
The county judge and four commissioners are scheduled to consider accepting his resignation, and possibly appoint his replacement, when they convene in a 9 a.m. special session Monday, May 6, in the first-floor commissioners’ courtroom at the Kerr County Courthouse, 700 Main Street. “Fortunately for us, we have every confidence that our election tomorrow (May 4) will continue without any problems,” said Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly, adding that Kerr County Senior Deputy Clerk - Elections Denise Vela and key staff members who have conducted the county’s elections for years, including Kerr County Tax Assessor-Collector Bob Reeves and the county’s Certified Elections/Registration Administrator Nadene Alford, are all very actively involved in the process and will continue to be throughout this election and future transitions.
“We know that this election will go smoothly, but we want our registered voters in Kerr County to share in our confidence that our elections are conducted with the utmost integrity,” Kelly said.
To be on site will be Debbie M. Abrego, an elections security trainer from the Secretary of State’s elections office.
Being decided in the City of Kerrville election tomorrow are the mayor’s position, as well as council seats for Places 3 and 4. Also on the ballot are 10 propositions for City Charter amendments. To view the sample ballot, click HERE.
The next election scheduled after this weekend will be the Republican Primary Runoff Election, which is scheduled for May 28, 2024.
