Kerr County posts 6th case of confirmed rabies for 2026
Kerr County has reported its sixth case of positive rabies of 2026 – this time in a skunk found in the Mountain Home area.
Reagan Givens, director of Kerr County Animal Control, said his office was notified of a deceased skunk found in the 61000 block of I-10 at Mountain Home on June 10.
An animal control officer went to the reporting family’s property the same day, and the specimen was collected and sent to the zoological lab for testing.
“We received results the following day that this was, in fact, an animal carrying the rabies disease,” Givens said. So far this year, rabies has been confirmed in 1 raccoon, 2 bats and 3 skunks.
“You never know when you or your pets will come into contact with a wild animal,” Givens said.
“Keep your family’s pet vaccinations up to date and never attempt to feed or pet any wildlife, including stray cats or dogs.”
If anyone notices an animal acting abnormally, they are asked to make a note of what it looks like, where its exact physical location is at the time of sighting and maybe even which direction it may be heading. Then, call that information in to the Kerr County Animal Control office at 830-257-3100. If the sighting happens outside normal business hours, then please call the information in to the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office at 830-896-1216.
