Veterans Day
Unlike Memorial Day in May, when we honor our nation’s fallen heroes, on Veterans Day we honor all those who have served our nation in the military services.
According to the Kerr County Veterans Service Office, Veterans Day originated as “Armistace Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I.
Congress passed a resolution in 1926 making it an annual observance, and it became a national holiday in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation 16 years later changing the name to Veterans Day to honor all those who served their country during war or peacetime.
On this day, the nation honors all military veterans – living and dead – with parades and other observances across the country. And, a ceremony is held yearly on the date at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
Kerr County Veterans Service Officer Jenna Sanchez said, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 15.8 million military veterans in the United States in 2023, representing a 6.1% of the total civilian population age 18 years and older.
Additionally, of that number, slightly over 10 percent of the veteran population is comprised of females (1.7 million).
“The Kerr County Veterans Service Office wants to take this time this opportunity to salute all veterans and their family members with respect and recognition. Thank you for service!” Sanchez said.
